Unicode is an encoding process where each character is provided a unique number, this is mapped in the GSM- 7 character set. Unicode SMS are text messages that contain characters not found in the GSM-7 character set. these messages are limited to 70 characters instead of 160 characters.

Any characters not included in the link above are considered Unicode and will shorten the maximum number of characters that are allowed in the message. Under the Main Text Message Script box it will display: Note: Due to special characters, this message will be sent in a format limited to XXX characters.

Removing the Unicode characters from the message will extend the maximum characters that can be used back to your expected number.
